As Samsung celebrates its 10th anniversary for their flagship series, the South Korean company looks back at their journey in the mobile innovation to help millions to accomplish more while on-the-go.

Laying the Foundation

It all started way before the smartphone became a thing. Back then Samsung had feature phones and they have been working to bring more functions to the handheld device. The introduction of the TV phone in 1999 allows consumers to watch their favourite channels without having to glue to their TVs. The Samsung B600, featuring a 10-megapixel camera, brought high-quality photography and mobile phone together. Even way before the release of a smartwatch, the development of the watch phone in 1999 was a huge hit at that time.

Besides, as we all know Samsung is one of the best display makers today, it is no surprise that Samsung had laid a rather strong foundation even back in 2002 with the release of True Colour Phone that introduces the world to the active matrix LCD display.

The Arrival of the Samsung Galaxy

Through the joint collaboration with Android, it has given birth to the Samsung Galaxy series smartphones. It was March 2010, Samsung releases the very first Galaxy S. It was a monster back then, packing a powerful SoC, 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a 5-megapixel camera. The company would then continued to expand its smartphone experience through each iteration.

In 2011, we saw one of the most significant smartphone releases of all time, the Galaxy Note series. Featuring a huge display alongside the S Pen stylus, it allows users to perform even more tasks on mobile. While some made fun of the 5.3-inch display because 4-inch was the mainstream size at that time, little did they know that in 2018, the majority of the smartphones out there sports a display between 5.5-inch to 6-inch.

Apart from hardware, the software ecosystem has come a long way since the day where the company throw every possible bloat features to their custom Android skin. Now, with the release of their latest One UI, we can definitely see how much the software team has matured. Notable features such as Samsung Knox and Samsung Pay are some of the best services the company could offer.

Shaping The Next Decade

With the rise of heated competition from the Chinese smartphone manufacturers, the future might seem bleak especially when technology theft and the price war being rampant. Samsung, on the other hand, set their sights on the future and focusing on engineering the technologies and breakthroughs that will continue to transform the mobile landscape.

By focusing on changing the way how we connect, Samsung is ushering in the move towards 5G with their extensive list of FCC-approved 5G network equipment. With successful deployments in South Korea, the partnership with US carriers would see the first wave of 5G technology arriving in the hands of consumers in the first half of 2019.

With that being said, the maturity of the smartphone industry today marks the beginning of the next chapter for mobile technology.
