Canon Malaysia announces new EOS R8 Mark II with new Design, creative features, and portable performance
Canon Malaysia has unveiled the latest EOS R8 Mark II, a compact and lightweight full-frame mirrorless camera featuring a 24.2-megapixel sensor. Let’s take a look at what it has to offer.
The Canon EOS R8 Mark II sports a sleek redesign inspired by the brand’s iconic pentaprism form, combining a compact body with improved ergonomics and portability. Measuring approximately 131.4 × 90.0 × 79.7mm and weighing around 546g, it is Canon’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera with In-Body IS.
The camera also introduces a multi-controller joystick for intuitive autofocus control, while the optional Extension Grip EG-E2 provides a more secure hold for users with larger hands and supports tripod mounting and battery changes.
At its core, the EOS R8 Mark II uses a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with a larger light-gathering area than APS-C sensors, enabling improved image quality, low-light performance, and autofocus. Its 5-axis In-Body IS reduces camera shake, with Coordinated Control IS providing up to 7.5 stops of stabilisation at the centre and 7.0 stops at the edges when paired with compatible RF lenses.
For capturing fast-moving subjects, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II works with Pre-Continuous Shooting and electronic-shutter burst shooting at up to 40fps, while Register People Priority allows autofocus to prioritise a specific registered person in crowded scenes.
Furthermore, the camera adds several in-camera creative tools, including the new NegativeFilmtone and PositiveFilmtone Color Filters, adjustable filter strength, and Handheld Night Scene Mode with four additional color settings. Its interval timer also gains exposure smoothing, timer priority, and delayed-start options.
Creative AUTO provides an intuitive interface for users to experiment with different looks, while the Background Blur function now extends to video, alongside Slow & Fast Motion Movie and Cinema View modes.
For video creators, the EOS R8 Mark II supports 6K-oversampled 4K 60p recording, Full HD 180p with audio, and Canon Log 3 for greater flexibility during colour grading. It also features Custom Picture with Custom LUT support and four wired and wireless livestreaming options, including multi-angle streaming through the Live Switcher Mobile app.
The camera supports full-frame and APS-C VR lenses and introduces VR Clear Mode to improve contrast and clarity when viewing VR footage, while the Dual Pixel 3D Converter software can turn still images into 3D models using depth information from the camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system.
Alongside the camera, Canon has announced three accessories: the Extension Grip EG-E2, the HG-1000TBR Tripod Grip bundled with the BR-E2 Bluetooth Remote Controller, and the Speedlite EL-5 (Ver. 2), which increases wireless communication range to about 50m compared with 30m on the previous model.
