Cadence reaches Level-5 autonomy with ChipStack AI Super Agent

Cadence has announced the transition of its ChipStack AI Super Agent to Level-5 autonomy at COMPUTEX 2026, debuting the industry’s first fully autonomous virtual agentic AI design engineer for semiconductor development.

The platform utilizes NVIDIA Nemotron models to execute complex chip design and verification workflows independently, shifting human engineers from task execution to high-level supervision. By evaluating intermediate results and determining sequential actions across RTL generation, specification comprehension, and formal analysis, the autonomous system can shrink traditional five-week verification loops to less than 24 hours.

The internal architecture links these AI-directed actions directly to Cadence’s physics-based engines, including Xcelium Logic Simulation and Jasper Formal Verification, ensuring all autonomous iterations remain grounded in signoff-accurate computational models. In production environments at NVIDIA, the agents are currently used to run hundreds of dynamic simulations per engineer, resulting in RTL validation cycles that are over 40 times faster than manual processes.

Security for autonomous deployment is managed through the NVIDIA OpenShell runtime, a specialized sandboxed environment that enforces governance policies and isolates sensitive intellectual property.

This architecture provides managed access to design data and infrastructure, allowing autonomous agents to operate within a governed framework that protects corporate assets during high-stakes engineering programs. The platform also maintains transparency through native integration with collaboration environments and compatibility with external tools like Codex or Claude Code, enabling human teams to inspect and guide the system’s decision-making process in real time.

Cadence’s ecosystem now includes the ViraStack AI Super Agent for custom analog design, the InnoStack AI Super Agent for digital implementation, and the Cadence AgentStack orchestration framework for cross-stack workflow coordination.

Level-5 autonomous capabilities for the ChipStack AI Super Agent are scheduled to enter early-access availability for selected customers in the second half of 2026.
