First Impression: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 (Mint)

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series is probably the most successful foldable smartphone in the world. While other competitors such as Motorola, Huawei and OPPO offer the same form factor device to the public, the harsh truth is, they never really caught up with the consumer demand. Samsung’s well-optimised software, hardware and especially the supply chain network make this the most advanced and accessible foldable phone.

Today what we have in the studio is the 2023 Mint colour Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5. Let’s unbox and I’ll share my first experience with this device.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 Unboxing

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 comes in minimalist packaging whereby the front image features the back of the device and its respective colour.

What you get in the package:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • SIM tray ejector tool

On the surface, the display might seem the same as last year. While the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display has the same 6.7-inch panel with 1080 x 2640 pixel resolution, Samsung has significantly increased the peak brightness from 1200 nits to 1750 nits.

Besides, the minimum storage capacity is doubled from last year’s 128 GB to 256 GB. This is the most welcomed update since 128 GB is never enough for the majority of users.

For the longest time ever, we are finally getting an updated front cover screen. It is now called “Flex Window” and features a 3.4-inch, 720 x 748 pixel resolution Super AMOLED panel. It is much more usable than the previous iterations by showing more controls and widgets.

The one we have is the Mint colour. We’re unsure if Samsung will bring back the Bespoke edition for this generation or not.

This year, we’re getting yet another Flex Hinge upgrade.

Finally, the phone can now be folded flat with no gap in between, all thanks to the use of the waterdrop hinge design.

That is quite an excellent step up from Samsung, considering how they have been leading the foldable industry with the most robust mechanism that also supports IPX8 water resistance. While it is true that some other competitors went with the waterdrop hinge earlier than expected but now Samsung has once again levelled the playing field with this advanced hinge.

Stay tuned for our full review where we test the phone in all aspects including the performance, camera, battery life and whether if this is the foldable phone you should get.
