Samsung reshuffles its foldables with the new Galaxy Z Fold8 lineup

Samsung has pulled off a rather interesting move for this year’s Galaxy Z “8” series of smartphones, as there’s a new shorter, wider model that looks like a chocolate bar (That’s why the ad, huh.).

The biggest surprise is the new Galaxy Z Fold8. Rather than following the tall smartphone-like shape of previous generations, Samsung opted for a much wider design. When unfolded, the device features a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. That makes it much closer to a tablet, giving videos less letterboxing and providing a more natural experience for reading, multitasking, or browsing.

Apps like Google Play Books also benefit from the wider screen, allowing users to comfortably view two pages side by side before seamlessly switching back to a single-page layout when the phone is folded.

The trade-off, however, comes when using the outer display. While the wider cover screen makes content easier to view, reaching across the display with one hand becomes noticeably more difficult.

Despite the larger footprint, the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs just 201g. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, packs a 4,800mAh battery, supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging, and keeps things simple with two rear cameras – a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide shooter.

Then the “Z Fold” that we’ve known for years is now the “Ultra”, and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra looks very similar to its predecessor but comes with several refinements throughout the hardware. It’s now just 4.1mm thick when unfolded, while a titanium alloy film beneath the flexible OLED display and an added titanium support plate improve rigidity and help keep the screen flatter.

Camera upgrades are relatively modest. The ultrawide camera now uses a new 50MP sensor, while the rest of the camera system, including both selfie cameras, remains unchanged. Samsung has also improved the display itself with 15% higher brightness, a 13% increase in pixel density for better clarity, and a new anti-reflective coating to improve outdoor visibility.

The screen size and overall aspect ratio remain the same as the previous Fold generation. Battery life also gets a welcome boost with a new 5,000mAh battery, while charging supports 45W wired and 25W wireless fast charging. Like its smaller sibling, the Fold8 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.

Then the Galaxy Z Flip8 may look “unchanged”, but the refinement comes in bits of here and there. The phone now weighs 180g and measures just 6.1mm thick. One of the most noticeable improvements is the cover display, where the bezel has been reduced to only 1.25mm, giving it a much cleaner and more modern appearance. Software takes center stage here as well.

The cover display now supports an improved Now Brief experience with personalized insights, recommended actions, daily routine automation, and even live delivery progress updates without needing to unfold the phone. And if you want to, the new Horizontal Lock feature can make handheld video recording more stable.

There are also various optimizations that we’ve noticed:

  • Now Nudge is more foldable-aware; tapping the suggestion launches the related app in split-screen.
  • Now Nudge may create reminders, pin locations directly to Maps, and even react to incoming notifications.
  • All models now have rounder edges, while the hinge strength and magnetic snap have been softened.
