The Behavioral Gap: Why Cybersecurity Experts Are Warning Malaysians This Festive Season

As the festive season kicks off with Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaching, cybersecurity experts are sounding the alarm: your digital wallet might be more vulnerable than you think.

A recent report from Kaspersky highlights a significant “behavioral gap” among Malaysians that cybercriminals are actively exploiting during high-spending periods. Here’s a breakdown of why festive e-payments are the new frontier for scams and how you can stay protected.

The Surge in Digital Transactions

Malaysia’s shift toward a cashless society has been rapid. According to Bank Negara Malaysia, e-payment activity reached an average of 409 transactions per capita in 2024. By May 2025, e-money values surged to RM21.5 billion—a 70% increase year-on-year.

While convenient, this high volume of transactions provides the perfect “noise” for scammers to hide in. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Kaspersky detected over 4 million web threat incidents in Malaysia.

The “Festive Blind Spot”

The primary danger isn’t just the technology—it’s our habits. During holidays, we tend to act with speed and familiarity. Whether it’s scanning a QR code for a quick “Ang Pow” or clicking a link for a festive discount, our guard naturally drops.

Common Seasonal Tactics:

  • Spoofed QR Codes: Fraudulent codes hidden in promotional vouchers or festive-themed messages.
  • Urgency Scams: Limited-time offers or “giveaways” that pressure you to click before thinking.
  • Donation Appeals: Fake charity links shared via social platforms or messaging apps.

Perception vs. Reality

The most concerning takeaway from the report is that 77% of Malaysians believe they can spot a scam on their own. However, only 52% actually use cybersecurity tools to secure their transactions.

As Simon Tung, General Manager for Kaspersky ASEAN, points out, modern scams are no longer “obvious deceptions.” They are designed to mirror legitimate local payment habits and festive cues, making it nearly impossible to rely on visual checks alone.

How to Protect Your Wallet

To avoid becoming a statistic this festive season, consider these proactive steps:

  • Verify the Source: Never scan a QR code or click a link from an unsolicited group chat or message without verifying it through an official channel.
  • Pause Before Paying: If a transaction feels urgent or “too good to be true,” take a moment to double-check the recipient’s details.
  • Upgrade Your Tech: Move beyond “manual vigilance.” Using a dedicated security solution with anti-phishing protection can catch spoofed websites that the human eye might miss.

Pro-tip for the tech-savvy: If you’re looking to beef up your device security, Kaspersky is currently offering up to 23% off their Premium suite during the Chinese New Year (Feb 1–15) and Ramadan (Feb 16–28) periods.
