Sony BRAVIA TV parts now made with SORPLAS from Recycled TV components

Sony has introduced a practical ‘Material-to-Material Recycling’ approach, reusing plastic from old TV rear covers to create new television components.
Thanks to a newly established collection facility, Sony now recycles plastic from retired TVs into SORPLAS, its proprietary flame-retardant material. This method will be used for the first time in the 65-inch 4K OLED BRAVIA 8 (2024 models), which is scheduled to ship globally in 2025.
Rear covers from end-of-life TVs contain mixed plastics, which previously hindered direct reuse due to varying textures and strength. To address this, Sony’s BRAVIA design team partnered with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation — the developer of SORPLAS — to develop advanced sorting and blending techniques tailored for TV production. This technology enables selective recovery and reuse of plastic from TV rear covers, regardless of brand, while maintaining the same high quality as standard SORPLAS.
Looking ahead, the brand aims to achieve full closed-loop recycling by reclaiming and reusing rear covers made with SORPLAS in future products.
