Samsung first introduced Onyx, the world’s first cinema LED screen, in 2017 at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul, later expanding to five more locations across Korea. Now, the next-generation Samsung Onyx has arrived, making its Korean debut at Lotte Cinema Sillim’s Gwang-eum LED theater, the brand’s seventh LED-equipped venue.

Samsung Onyx Korean Cinema Experience 1Samsung Newsroom recently visited the new Gwang-eum LED theater to learn why Lotte Cinema is expanding its cinema LED theaters lineup and moving away from the traditional projectors — and to experience the difference firsthand.

As the screen slowly illuminated the pitch-black theater, the difference became immediately clear — Samsung Onyx delivered stunning contrast with deep, true blacks, while the blend of light and color revealed a vibrant range of hues that felt almost tangible.

In contrast to traditional projectors, Samsung Onyx uses LED light to produce accurate blacks and whites along with a rich, vivid color palette. Its excellent contrast and uniform brightness also remove light bleed, ensuring dark scenes stay sharp and textured.

On top of that, a new 2025 model (ICD) spanning nearly 11 meters in width has been installed at Lotte Cinema Sillim’s Gwang-eum LED theater — the largest size achievable within the venue.

This was enabled by Samsung Onyx’s flexible scaling, which allows custom dimensions beyond the standard 5m (1.25mm pixel pitch), 10m (2.5mm), and 14m (3.3mm) widths. At this theatre, extra cabinets were attached to the sides and bottom of the standard 10-meter model to expand the display by over 30 percent.

Furthermore, Samsung Onyx achieves peak brightness of up to 300 nits — roughly six times brighter than conventional projector systems — producing sharp, lifelike visuals even in well-lit settings. This allows theaters to utilize the space for more than just movie screenings, supporting events such as live concert broadcasts, sports match viewings, and dine-in cinema experiences.
