AGI EDM38 Magnetic Portable SSD Review – Your New On-the-Go Storage?

A portable SSD is an essential tool for content creators, students, or anyone needing reliable, speedy storage. The AGI EDM38 Magnetic Portable SSD stands out as a powerful contender, especially for iPhone or smartphone users who embrace the MagSafe technology.

AGI EDM38

Fingerprint magnet

The AGI EDM38 impresses immediately with its sleek design. Available in white and black, it features glossy plastic plates with a metal trim. It feels solid yet remarkably lightweight at just 56 grams, and its compact, square form factor (62x62x11.5mm) fits easily into any pocket.

Its key feature is the magnetic attachment. With MagSafe compatibility, the EDM38 snaps securely onto the back of your phone that is compatible with MagSafe, transforming your phone into a high-capacity recording studio or expanded storage.

For non-MagSafe devices, AGI includes a metal ring for the same magnetic convenience.

The universal USB Type-C port ensures the EDM38 works seamlessly with a wide array of devices that includes Windows laptops, MacBooks, and Android tablets, and each time it was truly plug-and-play. No drivers, no complicated setup – just connect and go. This versatility makes it ideal for various workflows, whether editing photos, backing up documents, or simply expanding device storage.

Performance

USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps)

Performance-wise, the EDM38 delivers. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C interface promises blistering theoretical read speeds over 2050 MB/s. Our test result on a PC confirmed these claims, showing real-world speeds that significantly impact workflow. Large file transfers are lightning-fast, and applications launch with minimal delay.

The downside? Your host device need to be able to support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) interface which is suffering from the middle child syndrome. While it doubles the speed of the standard USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps), it comes at the worst possible time as ThunderBolt 4 and USB 4 (both 40Gbps) started to gain traction. Most of the devices either support ThunderBolt 4 or outright just go along with USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps).

While Thunderbolt 4 is backward compatible with USB 3.2 and can utilize the 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2, it typically doesn’t support the dual-lane 20Gbps of USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. Bummer.

Then again, it doesn’t affect your plan to use the drive to record ProRes 4K 60fps on Pro iPhones. For those who are unaware, since iPhone 15 Pro, Apple allows direct, high-quality video capture from your iPhone camera, effectively bypassing common storage limitations.

Conclusion

The AGI EDM38 is clearly designed for modern users. Its magnetic feature and compact size meet the growing demand for on-the-go productivity and content creation. While peak speeds require a host device supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, performance remains excellent even with older USB standards for most daily tasks. 10Gbps is plentiful for 90% of the users.

AGI EDM38 Magnetic Protable SSD packaging

In conclusion, the AGI EDM38 Magnetic Portable SSD is a standout blend of stylish design, robust magnetic attachment, blazing-fast performance, and broad compatibility external SSD. An exceptional choice for portable and reliable external storage. For MagSafe users, it’s a near-essential accessory, unlocking new possibilities for mobile content creation. For everyone else, it’s simply a fantastic, efficient portable SSD.
